The College of Development Communication (CDC) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is the pioneer in the study and practice of development communication in Asia. In more than six decades, CDC has evolved from a service unit into the first academic institution in the world that offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Development Communication. CDC was the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education Center of Excellence in communication and development communication in 1999–2002 and in 2012–2014, respectively. The College also passed the Quality Assurance Standard conducted by the ASEAN University Network in 2015.
The College has four departments, namely: Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunication (DDBT), Department of Development Journalism (DDJ), Department of Educational Communication (DEC), and Department of Science Communication (DSC). Research, extension and public service involvements of CDC includes: the establishment of the he global web portal on Collaborative Change Communication for Development and the regional web portal on Communication for Development in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization; technical assistance in the establishment of community rural radio in Bangladesh; development broadcast programs of Radyo DZLB and community publication of Los Banos Time in multi-media platform; research on Philippines’ national science communication framework; and the Science Communication Fellowship mentorship program for selected Filipino researchers.
